New Albums
🌶️ Turnstile
Hardcore punk, USA (Roadrunner)
FFO: Angel Du$t, Quicksand, Scowl
There’s almost equal parts rough and restraint on Never Enough, and it’s amazing how well it all clicks into eachother. The dreamy parts are fleshed out more than on Glow On, and it works all the better because they’re taken seriously. Some commenters will say there’s too much filler, but they’re mistaking tasteful jazzy, dreamy passages for unnecessary ideas. I love hearing Shabaka motherfucking Hutchings flute out on a hardcore track! And in the perfect choruses they’ve always been good at, they’re at the top of their game. “Sohohohoohohoooole!” It’s a combination that is *chef’s kiss*. Wherever this band goes on the album, I follow. One of the best records of the year.
🌶️ Gruesome
Prog death, USA (Relapse Records)
FFO: Death
Everyone has their own personal favourite Death album, but everyone’s number two is Human - if it’s not number one. Death-scientists Gruesome have finally put their stethoscopes on that landmark of progressive death metal, and asked: what if Chuck, Sean, Steve and Paul asked us to make 8 more tracks? It works so so well. If there’s a cd player in death metal heaven, I’m sure Sean Reinert - who was mentor to Gruesome drummer Gus - would be fucking proud.
🌶️ Katatonia
Gothic/alternative, Sweden (Napalm Records)
FFO: Opeth, Swallow the Sun, Leprous
Bad news. I couldn’t get through this new Katatonia album in one sitting. It’s not bad, it’s just not very compelling. There are just not enough moments that really grab my attention, and I would consider myself a Katatonia fanboy! I’ve loved most of their discography, but I do think that after the brilliant The Fall of Hearts, the band seems to scramble for ideas. Which is also the last album now departed guitarist Anders Nyström had written for. Coincidence?
There’s more: an ep from Funeral (🌶️ gothic/doom, Norway), Volbeat (heavy/groove, Denmark), Gaahls Wyrd (black/heavy, Norway), Drakenhöld (black, France), Ukhu Pacha (black, USA), Austere (depressive black, Australia), A-Z (prog/hard rock, USA), King Parrot (thrash/grind, Australia), and a demo from Invocation Ritual (🌶️ death, USA). The rest is in the playlist!
Six new songs
🌶️ Amorphis (melodic heavy/prog, Finland)
🌶️ Paradise Lost (gothic/doom, UK)
🌶️ Dark Angel (thrash, USA)
🌶️ Imperial Crystalline Entombment (black, USA)
🌶️ Rebaelliun (death, Brazil)
🌶️ Clairvoyance (death, Poland)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of the week: Little Simz (hiphop, UK)
Next week: Hexvessel & Fallujah.
What is your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
so much goodness! Turnstile for always.
Not metal but I highly recommend Frankie and the Witch Fingers' new album Trash Classic. Psych rock with some great forward momentum and a bit of edge to it.
