New Albums
🌶️ Yellow Eyes (black/other stuff from the USA. FFO: Ash Borer, Ustalost, Fluisteraars)
This is one of my goddamn absolute favourite bands. The atmosphere the brothers Skarstad, Alexander DeMaria and the tameless beast Michael Rekevics create is just unparalleled in black metal - they were the opening band of my compilation. There is elusive beauty in the way they manage to have their songs sound composed and thought out, yet spontaneous and feral. This new album is a big surprise they dropped on us, just announced last wednesday while it was finished only a few days earlier. A musical fever dream.
It’s a surprise just by it’s existence and the knowledge that there’s another one still coming next year, but also by its form: traditional black metal is largely (but not entirely) eschewed, and instead Yellow Eyes dive deep into an experiment of industrial, folky, ambient, synthy realms, and it’s a truly fantastic listen. I guess there are traces of Will Skarstad’s soloproject Ustalost and also of Sunrise Patriot Motion, the entirely dark post-punk industrial thing the brothers did last year. But this is totally different too, and still also still just quite Yellow Eyesey. If that makes sense. There are flutes, strings, keys, screams, frogs, birds… the sheep in ‘Gold Door to Blindness’ alone deserve a Grammy. This is absolutely unique. God I love this band.
🌶️ Autopsy (death from the USA. FFO: Asphyx, Obituary, Incantation)
Let’s open up this body and see what’s inside.
🌶️ Malokarpatan (black/heavy from Slovakia. FFO: Mortuary Drape, Root, Funereal Presence)
A perfect blend of heavy, black and dungeon synth, there are not many bands that pull that off. Malokarpatan can, have, and do it again on their fourth full length.
There’s more: Wayfarer (🌶️ atmospheric black/folk from the USA), End (blackened hardcore/grind from the USA), Gravesend (black/grind from the USA), Year of the Knife (🌶️ metalcore from the USA), Sorcerer (epic doom from Sweden), Doro (heavy from Germany), Ershetu (🌶️ black from France - with Borknagar/Solefald’s Lazare and Blut Aus Nord’s Vindsval), One of Nine (black, I don’t know where from), Cardinals Folly (doom from Finland), Lowest Creature (thrash/crossover from the USA), Flesh of the Stars (prog doom from the USA), Sepulchral Curse (blackened death from Finland), Robes of Snow (post-black/folk from the USA), Rile (metal/metalcore from the USA), and a live album from Ulver (🌶️ avantgarde electronic from Norway). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Vastum (🌶️ death from the USA), Varathron (🌶️ black from Greece), Skeletal Remains (🌶️ death from the USA), two songs from Chelsea Wolfe (folk/doom from the USA), Ringarë (🌶️ atmospheric black from the USA - with members of Chaos Moon, Musmahhu), Job for a Cowboy (deathcore/prog death from the USA), Vemod (black from Norway), Devin Townsend (prog/rock/ambient from Canada), Pyrolatrous (blackened melodeath from the USA w/ members of Krallice, Anicon), Xoth (tech death/black/thrash from the USA) and Solbrud (black from Denmark). The rest is in the playlist!
