New Albums
🌶️ Wolves in the Throne Room (atmoblack from the USA. FFO: Saor, Panopticon, Weakling)
Just an ep from the reigning masters of this sound, but worth it. The new songs (‘Initiates of the White Hart’ is a variation on ‘Spirit of Lightning’) bite ánd caress, and there’s a blazing fire in the heart of it that I really love. Especially that first song doesn’t let go easily.
🌶️ Blackbriar (symphonic/gothic from The Netherlands. FFO: Within Temptation, Delain, Epica)
Aaah symphonic metal. When well done it’s good, but that hasn’t happened very often this millennium yet. Blackbriar are the exception. A talented and hard working band with a good ear for melody and hooks, a great singer and the big production that this music needs. I love that there are still Dutch acts out there carrying this flame.
🌶️ Moonlight Sorcery (meloblack from Finland. FFO: Stormkeep, Emperor, Children of Bodom)
Super shreddy black metal with epic leads and epic-er choruses. After two ep’s there’s finally a full length, and although there’s really not one thing new here, it sure is a fun journey.
🌶️ Filth Is Eternal (hardcore punk from the USA. FFO: Buggin, Gouge Away, Spy)
It took Filth is Eternal (formerly known as Fucked & Bound which - big surprise - wasn’t a name that got them a lot of gigs) 1 minute and thirty seconds to win me over. First single ‘Crawl Space’ is such a burst of energy, and the rest of the album follows suit. I really want to see this band live.
🌶️ Woe (black from the USA. FFO: Vanum, Yellow Eyes, Wiegedood)
Raw and nihilistic, but you’ll want to come back again and again to this firebrand of an album. (I wasn’t particularly looking forward to this based on the singles, but it’s on repeat now!)
🌶️ Aset (black, international. FFO: Akhlys, Oranssi Pazuzu, Aosoth)
Now this is scary music. Take Nile, Behemoth and Oranssi Pazuzu and you’ll get this grim concoction. There are members from Oranssi Pazuzu and Seth in this band, and “other still undisclosed bands” so that kind of makes sense I guess. Great sound.
🌶️ Solipnosis (prog black/speed from Chile. FFO: Funereal Presence, Volahn, Spirit Possession)
Completely bonkers blackened speed metal with zero predictability and one million energy. Never change, Chile.
🌶️ Bear (progressive hardcore from Belgium. FFO: Between the Buried and Me, Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan)
I love a good surprise. I had never heard of this band before I got a ping from Pelagic this morning, and then I still didn’t think a band called Bear would be something for me. But I love it. It’s melodic and heavy, there’s riffage (I need riffage in my hardcore or I’m out) and that voice is enough to break down a brick building.
There’s more: Nervosa (thrash from Brazil), Primordial (🌶️ celtic folk/black from Ireland), Desecresy (death from Finland), Rorcal (🌶️ sludge/doom/post from Switzerland), Night in Gales (🌶️ melodeath from Germany), Ruin Lust (black/death from the USA - w/ members of Vanum, Vilkacis, Yellow Eyes), Aset (🌶️ black from Finland/France - /w members of Oranssi Pazuzu, Seth), Ushangvagush (🌶️ raw-ish black from the USA), Oreamnos (🌶️ black/death from the USA), Iskandr (folk/doom/black from the Netherlands), Waldgeflüster (black from Germany), Dwaal (sludge/post from Norway) and KK’s Priest (heavy from the UK/USA - ex-Judas Priest). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Vastum (🌶️ death from the USA), Malokarpatan (black/heavy from Slovakia), Cobra Spell (🌶️ heavy from the Netherlands), Year of the Knife (🌶️ metalcore from the USA, Autopsy (🌶️ death from the USA), Earthside (prog from the USA), Bewitcher (black/speed from the USA) and a live track from Orphaned Land (doom/death/folk from Israel). The rest - and there’s a lot htis week - is in the playlist!
Non-heavy & next week
Non-heavy album of the week: Oneohtrix Point Never (electronic from the USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: October Tide, Heretoir, Salacious Gods, Sühnopfer & Svalbard.
