Hey, doed.
New Albums
🌶️ Doedsmaghird
Prog black, Norway (Peaceville Records)
FFO: Dødheimsgard, Oranssi Pazuzu, Code
The last Dødheimsgard was one of my favourite albums of last year, to my own surprise. I always liked them, but not like Black Medium Current. I imagine Vicotnik and co liked it too, but at the same time they yearned for something more primal and twisted. Enter Doedsmaghird, the accompanying evil twin to Dødheimsgard. And twisted it is, a free form black metal concoction where electronic beats or piano parts can pop up in between the poisonous riffs at any moment.
🌶️ Oranssi Pazuzu
Pysch black, Finland (Nuclear Blast)
FFO: Hail Spirit Noir, Ved Buens Ende, Dødheimsgard
I’ve dreaded writing this blurb, because I love this band, while the new album isn’t doing much for me. Am I going crazy, is this a little bit boring? Is it just me? Hmm. Well, if I’ve learned anything from Oranssi Pazuzu over the years is to take it slow, give it time and space. So that’s what I’m going to do, and then who knows where it’ll take me. Hopefully somewhere.
🌶️ Chat Pile
Sludge/noise, USA (The Flenser)
FFO: Thou, KEN Mode, Oozing Wound
One of the best shows I saw this year, was the European live debut of Chat Pile at Roadburn. You just wouldn’t expect such a huge wave of energy coming from these noisy slackers. It helped me understand the hype around God’s Country, and I’m happy there is a new album already. On first listen it doesn’t seem to to be as bleak as it’s predecessor, but my god it’s bitter and raw.
There’s more: The Crown (melodeath, Sweden), Master Boot Record (🌶️ industrial/chiptune, Italy), Envy (🌶️ screamo/post-hardcore, Japan), Dragony (symphonic power, Austria), Wrathprayer (black/death, Chile) and an ep from Morbific (death, Finland). The rest is in the playlist!
Four new songs
🌶️ Bedsore (prog death, Italy)
🌶️ Paysage d’Hiver (black/ambient, Switzerland)
🌶️ Kruelty (death/doom/hardcore, Japan)
🌶️ Ataraxie (funeral doom, France)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of the week: Goat (experimental/psych rock, Sweden)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Immortal Bird, Escuela Grind, Ashen Tomb, Dawnwalker, Ensiferum and Forn.
What is your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
