🌶️ To The Teeth: Voyager should've won the Eurovision Songfestival (but they won my heart)

New Albums
🌶️ Voyager (prog from Australia. FFO: Leprous, Devin Townsend, Haken)
Yes. This is the Eurovision Songfestival contender. But I don’t care because Voyager is great and this album is great too. It’s so catchy, so full of memorable hooks and choruses. Sure it’s glittery and poppy and as sweet as a rainbow coloured unicorn with a care bear hugging its horn, but I don’t care! Voyager Just. Rocks. They should’ve won the dumb song game, but at least they won me over.
🌶️ Voice of Baceprot (thrash/groove/nu from Indonesia. FFO: System of a Down, Acrassicauda, Rage Against the Machine)
I love what they’ve done with the layered vocals, I love the groove, the energy, the cool bass lines and focused lyrics - even it’s all a little rough at the edges. And some of these tunes are really goddamn catchy too. Is this band a little overhyped because they’re young women from Indonesia with hijabs who rock their socks off and noone is used to that image? Sure. But is that bad? They’ve somehow managed to get this far while coming from a very conservative milieu. Keep that in mind, it can’t be easy. And when you hear them sing “I’m not the enemy, I just wanna sing a song to show my soul”, well… that can’t be wrong. All power to them.
🌶️ Imperceptum (atmoblack/funeral doom. FFO: Darkspace, Mournful Congregation)
This band should be more well-known. I guess the sole member of Imperceptum, one ‘Ali’ or ‘Void’) doesn’t really go for that, with his albums just dropping on streaming services without warning or press release or whatever. But this blend of spacey, atmospheric black metal with crushing funeral doom is so good.
There’s more: End Reign (crossover thrash from the USA), Ascendency (black/death from Denmark), Deitus (black from the UK), Calligram (black/hardcore from the UK), Evile (thrash from the UK), Eleine (symphonic from Sweden), Melted Bodies (🌶️ experimental all kinds of things from the USA), Chepang (🌶️ grind from Nepal - I thought I only saw a single last week, but it’s a full length!), a compilation from cool label Everlasting Spew, plus the rerecordings of Sepultura’s first two releases by the Cavalera bro’s (thrash/death from Brazil). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Baroness (🌶️ progressive sludge from the USA), Brujeria (🌶️ death/grind from Mexico), Anti-God Hand (🌶️ black from Canada - feat. the drummer from Liturgy), Upon Stone (🌶️ melodeath from the USA), Mutoid Man (metalcore/rock/speed/heavy? from the USA), Svalbard (post-hardcore from the UK), Esoctrilihum (black from France), Tesseract (prog/djent from the UK), Imperial Crystalline Entombment (black from the USA), 夢遊病者 (Sleepwalker) (psych black from Japan), The Lion’s Daughter (prog/blackened sludge from the USA), Temic (prog, international - w/ members of Haken, Shining), Runespell (black from Australia), Dying Fetus (brutal death/grind from the USA), Laster (🌶️ experimental/atmospheric black from The Netherlands) and Woe (🌶️ black from the USA). The rest is in the playlist!
Non-heavy & next week
Non-heavy album of the week: Temple of Angels (alternative/shoegaze from the USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Agriculture, Outer Heaven, Gateway, Inhuman Condition & Mizmor.
What was your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
Thanks for the list! I'm also planning to check out the new Chamber as well as the Enzyme and Ascendency records though all 3 bands are new to me.
Oi, Peter, when you're referring to Svalbard fronted by Serena Cherry (Twitter: @whatacoolfridge) in your newsletter: they're from the UK 😜
They're probably too "popular" to have a Metal Archives entry though, that's where only the Svalbard from Canada is present.
