🌶️ To The Teeth: Ugly demon pulls stomping death metal out of it's lower mouth
Plus: Sunrise Patriot Motion, Häxanu, Týr, Castle Rat, Mór, Vulture, Darkthrone, Thou & much more!
Welcome to the To The Teeth newsletter! Your weekly update of new heavy music. You can listen to (most) everything in the playlist on Spotify. If you like what you read, go to Patreon (receive a patch!) & Bandcamp (buy a patch!). Peppers are hot 🌶️!
I’ll be at Roadburn next week, so there’s no newsletter. Hopefully I’ll be able to update the playlist, but I can’t promise anything. Cya after that!
New Albums
🌶️ Necrot
Death, USA (Tankcrimes)
FFO: Bolt Thrower, Incantation, Tomb Mold
The main course this week is served by an ugly demon who pulls little people from her eh, lower mouth? Well, or whatever it is. It’s made by the same guy who works with Mastodon, Baroness and Metallica, I love he’s still in for filthy, stomping, rotten, slime ridden, worm infested death metal. But why wouldn’t he? This is good.
🌶️ Sunrise Patriot Motion
Post-punk/gothic/black metal, USA (Gilead Media)
FFO: Ustalost, Këkht Aräkh, Lifelover
I love that this side project from the brothers Will and Sam Skarstad (Yellow Eyes, Ustalost - just some of the best black metal projects out there) is starting to take shape: they’re not only playing Roadburn next week (count me in), there’s this new ep and they are officially no longer an act with just one release. It’s great, too: brooding and driving with beautiful synths, haunting melodies, kickass bass lines, and I like the two interludes as well.
🌶️ Häxanu & Collier d’Ombre
Black, USA (Narbentage Produktionen)
FFO: Chaos Moon, Misþyrming, Adzalaan
Häxanu keeps getting better! On this new split with Collier d’Ombre - never heard of, cool band - they’re expanding their sound just another notch again, and build upon their excellent two full lengths. Alex Poole (Krieg, Chaos Moon, Entheogen, etc) and LC (Lichmagick) are really onto something. Man, the leads in that first track, rrrr.
🌶️ Týr
Viking/folk, Faroe Islands (Metal Blade Records)
FFO: Turisas, Heidevolk, Enslaved
If you liked Týr before, you’ll like this one. Nothing has changed much, but I don’t think that’s bad. Epic, progressive, vikingy folk metal with good synths and great vocals. What’s not to like.
🌶️ Castle Rat
Doom, USA (King Volume Records)
FFO: Lucifer, Ghost, Black Sabbath
Best. Band name. Ever.
🌶️ Mór
Atmoblack, France (Les Acteurs de L'Ombre)
FFO: Weakling, Trespasser, Vanum
The surprise of the week (for me) comes from Normandy. The FFO’s go everywhere, but this reminds me of all of those in a way. The leads from Weakling, the dynamics of Trespasser (they share a guitarist) and the agression of Vanum. But forget about all of that: Mór is it’s own thing, and this debut full length (almost a decade after the first demo) is a great way to kick off a career.
There’s more: Vulture (🌶️ speed/thrash, Germany), Exist (🌶️ prog, USA), Replicant (tech death, USA), Sarcasm (blackened death, Sweden), a split from Ontaard & Throwing Bricks (both post/sludge/hardcore, The Netherlands), Attacker (heavy/power, USA), Heresiarch (black/death, New Zealand), K.L.L.K (black, France - the final Solar Asceticists release), Nimbifer (🌶️ black, Germany), a split from Draghkar & Helcaraxë (both death, USA), Tarot (heavy/hardrock, Australia) and Heavy Temple (psych doom, USA). The rest is in the playlist!
Five new songs
🌶️ Darkthrone (dark/throne, Norway)
🌶️ Thou (sludge/doom, USA)
🌶️ Sonja (heavy/gothic, USA)
🌶️ Öxxö Xööx (avantgarde/gothic/doom/umlauts, France)
🌶️ Saidan (black/alternative?, USA)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of the week: Nia Archives (electronic pop, USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Dool, My Dying Bride, Antichrist Siege Machine, Dvne, High on Fire & Kawir.
