New Albums
đśď¸ Tower
Heavy, USA (Cruz del Sur)
FFO: Sanhedrin, Savage Master, Blood Star
Sarabeth Linden is an international treasure. Her voice destroyed my brain for the first time with Towerâs 2021 screamer âBlood Moonâ, a track I was thrilled to feature on the To The Teeth compilation a year later. The new album is at least as ambitious, showcasing the bandâs sharpened writing chops while still holding high the iron fist of eighties heavy metal and still having Lindenâs pipes as unique selling point. Iâm not sure if thereâs a âBlood Moonâ on it, but the album as a whole is a package Iâm returning to more often than the previous one. Heavy metal is alive, anb itâs beating heart is in the hands of Sarabeth Linden.
Fun fact: sheâs been on tour with Mutoid Man as a merch girl more than ten years ago. They rightfully couldnât let it pass without calling her on stage every night to do a Dio-era Sabbath banger.
đśď¸ Cradle of Filth
Black/gothic, UK (Napalm Records)
FFO: Dimmu Borgir, Carach Angren, Behemoth
Our favourite fun-sized blasphemers are back. Yet another line-up change, with a new guitarist and new keyboardist/singer. Doesnât matter. As long as Daniboy stays, I think itâll sound like Cradle. This new album doesnât experiment or stray from the path too much: if you liked them before, youâll enjoy album number fourteen. If you didnât, you wonât. I did, I do.
đśď¸ Imperial Triumphant
Avantgarde, tech death, USA (Century Media Records)
FFO: Thantifaxath, Portal, Deathspell Omega
Do I like this band? I donât know. Itâs disturbing, challenging and hardly enjoyable - in the classical sense. But still, it pulls me in and chews me up.
Thereâs more: Drudkh (đśď¸ atmoblack, Ukraine đť), Corpus Offal (death, USA - w/ Cerebral Rot, Bell Witch, Caustic Wound), RothadĂĄs (death/doom, Hungary - w/ members of Cryptworm, Coffinborn) and an ambient album from Midnight Odyssey (black metal/ambient, Australia). The rest is in the playlist!
Nine new songs
đśď¸ The Haunted (melodeath, Sweden)
đśď¸ Hexvessel (psych folk/post-black/doom, Finland)
đśď¸ Pelican (post-metal, USA)
đśď¸ Melvins (sludge/etc, USA)
đśď¸ Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (stoner metal, UK - I never expected to have a song with motherfucking El P in the playlist!)
đśď¸ Gabestok (black/punk, Denmark)
đśď¸ Youth Code (industrial/hardcore punk, USA)
đśď¸ Inhuman Nature (thrash/crossover, UK)
đśď¸ Blackbriar (sympho, The Netherlands)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of the week: Tamino (indie folk, Belgium)
Iâm looking forward to next week because of: Deafheaven, Amenra, Alien Weaponry, Luciferâs Child, Savage Master, Arch enemy, Grey Aura & Teitanblood.
What is your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
Heerlijk. De groundhog day van de gothic blackmetal.
Hey Peter. Ik zag deze week de Canadese band Sedimentum live in Groningen. En dĂĄt was me toch een potje intens en gelaagd en hard en eerlijkgezegd een van de betere bands die ik in tijden live zag en misschien itâs voor jou!? Groet Nadia
