New Albums

🌶️ The Mosaic Window (melodic black from the USA. FFO: Svrm, Dødsdrift, Burial Hordes)

There are so many one-man black metal projects. Many are not worth your time. Some are good! But few are this good. The Mosaic Window - of which I had never heard before Bandcamp’s best of the month overview - have a unique sound (the FFO’s are a bad throw), melodic and forward thinking, with heavy death metal elements and super riffy leads. This motherfucker can play guitar! I had been hoping to stumble upon a black metal album that would trvly make my jaw drop this year. Here it is.

🌶️ Static Abyss (death/doom from the USA. FFO: Coffins, Winter, Disembowelment)

This is an Autopsy-side project, and it shows. Chris Reifert’s vocals of course, and Greg Wilkinson’s plodding cadence. It’s a little bit dialed down on the brutality, and added atmosphere and dooooom.

🌶️ Big Garden (alternative from the USA. FFO: Deftones, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins)

I love alternative rock/punk rock/ alt metal like this. It’s nostalgic, for sure, but I’m on my way to become an old geezer so that’s fine. This is quality nostalgia too, from two guys from Thou (who did amazing grunge covers, but also channeled the style on the beautiful Rhea Sylvia and Inconsolable). They combine grunge and shoegaze to create something that’s familiar and still exciting.

🌶️ Divide & Dissolve (drone/doom from Australia. FFO: Locrian, The Body, Earth)

This band makes the most beautiful intro’s. But it’s not beauty they’re after, it’s destruction. Their drones might be industrial, they’re not silent.
