🌶️ To The Teeth: Stoner is summer music
Plus: Februus, Circle of Sighs, Hexvessel, Chat Pile, Simone Simons & much more!
Welcome to the To The Teeth newsletter! Your weekly update of new heavy music. You can listen to (most) everything in the playlist on Spotify. If you like what you read, go to Patreon (receive a patch!) & Bandcamp (buy a patch!). Peppers are hot 🌶️!
It’s truly summer. Releases are scarse, but when scraping the bottom there’s still some good stuff to dig into. Next week - if I have the time - will be the last newsletter before I’m out for a few weeks. I won’t update the playlist either BUT when I come back it’ll be like not going to the toilet for four days and then suddenly, boom, an insanely large (and foul, no doubt) update.
New Albums
🌶️ Orange Goblin
Stoner, UK (Peaceville Records
FFO: Kyuss, Corrosion of Conformity, High on Fire
Big, burly stoner veterans, back with album number 10 after five years of silence. Orange Goblin borders sludge metal and they often go over the edge here. Can’t complain, it’s quintessential summer music to me. More cowbell!
🌶️ Februus
Death, Sweden (Transcending Obscurity)
FFO: Anata, Stargazer, VoidCeremony
Cheating with this one, because this came out independently last year and I even mentioned it in the newsletter. But when they signed to Transcending Obscurity it got removed, and now this album gets a proper release. Twisted, creative and often neckbreakingly fast death metal. With a sense of humour, why else would you name a song ‘Morning Star over Deathlehem’.
🌶️ Circle of Sighs
Avantgarde progressive doom/black, USA (independent)
FFO: Pig Destroyer, Mr. Bungle, Anaal Nathrakh, Fela Kuti, Cardiacs, Bohren & Der Club of Gore (this is what they said)
Yeah that artwork is a choice. If you like it, you might like they’re selling the cassette incapsulated in a huge gummy bear, too. I’m here for the music, and it’s good in the same way the smell of gasoline is good.
There’s more: Werewolves (tech black/death, Australia) Arka’n Asrafokor (groove/nu/death, Togo - note: Spotify says 2023, but that’s a mistake), Raat (post-black, India), Occulta Veritas (atmoblack, Italy), Ceremony of Silence (blackened death, Slovakia), Alburnum (folk/black, The Netherlands - releases saturday), Todesstoss (black, Germany), Grimoire (post-black, Indonesia), a split from Decayed & Cemetery Lights & Caixão (black from Portugal & USA)
Highlights from last week: Vuur & Zijde (post-punk/post-black, The Netherlands), Forgotten Tomb (black/gothic/doom, Italy), Speed (hardcore, Australia) and Vanhelgd (death, Sweden).
The rest is in the playlist!
Five new songs
🌶️ Hexvessel (psych/folk/black, Finland)
🌶️ Chat Pile (sludge/noise, USA)
🌶️ Meer (prog/pop, Norway)
🌶️ Gaerea (black, Portugal)
🌶️ Jade (atmospheric death, Germany/Spain)
🌶️ Simone Simons (symphonic/prog, The Netherlands)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of last & this week: Al Di Meola (jazz, USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Mayhemic, Void Witch, Wormwitch & Laceration.
