New Albums
🌶️ Fluisteraars (black from The Netherlands. FFO: Yellow Eyes, Weakling)
Fluisteraars (‘whisperers’) are one of the best Dutch black metal acts, but I would argue they’re just one of the best black metal acts, period. Restless creativity, fury, beauty, experimentation - it all seems to fold so naturally within their sound. With the second part in this trilogy, they keep their sound exciting as always.
🌶️ Demoniac (blackened thrash from Chile. FFO: Vektor, Cryptic Shift)
Blackened thrash, a straightforward affair, you say? Demoniac says no. These Chileans do riffy thrash without boundaries. There are twists and turns you won’t see coming, lyrics in a barky Spanish that is an attack on every healthy heartrate, there’s clarinet, there’s accordeon. It’s a blast.
🌶️ Imperial Crystalline Entombment (black from the USA. FFO: Immortal, Emperor, Aurora Borealis)
Am I a total poser for not having heard of this band before the Ixiol re-release of their previous album? Or was that an eye opener for a big part of the metal-sphere? Anyway, they have a new one out. And if you like black metal riffs you’ll fall for this band, who are, of course, still fucking iiiiiiiice.
🌶️ Weald and Woe (melodic black from the USA. FFO: Obsequiae, Véhémence)
Not many bands scratch that Obsequiae-itch and although Weald and Woe here can’t reach those heights either - because who can? No one can - they come damn close. I like they chose the more aggressive side of things, venturing more into meloblack territory than just leaning on the medievalisms. Plus they also in a strange way remind me of Nechochwen, just without the folky bits.
🌶️ Undergang
Straight to the skull, pure goddamn death metal.
🌶️ Bergfried (heavy from Austria. FFO: romance, castles, heavy metal)
The first Bergfried was the first thing I heard from Erech Leleth. It was Invisible Orange’s Jon Rosenthal, I believe, who told me I should not sleep on whatever Leleth would produce and he was so right: Ancient Mastery, Carathis, Sumer Haze ‘99 - it’s all great. New Bergfried leans further into AOR and hardrock territory, which is not a bad thing. Beautiful leads, great melodies, fantastic vocals.
🌶️ Exhumed (death/grind from the USA. FFO: Carcass, Aborted, Lock Up)
Surprise! More death metal!
There’s more: Soen (prog from Sweden), Marduk (black from Sweden), Egregore (black/death/grind from the USA), A Pregnant Light (post-black from the USA), Heads for the Dead (death, international) and Grave Pilgrim (raw melodic black from the USA). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Afterbirth (🌶️ brutal death from the USA), Heretoir (depressive/post-black from Germany - feat. Tim Yatras of Austere), Insomnium (melodeath from Finland), Sühnopfer (🌶️ meloblack from France), Auriferous Flame (🌶️ black from Greece - this is Ayloss from Spectral Lore), Ifernach (black from Canada), Deitus (black from the UK), Slidhr (black from Ireland), Woe (black from the USA), Fabricant (🌶️ death from the USA), Sadus (tech trash from the USA), Nervosa (thrash from Brazil), On Thorns I Lay (🌶️ doom/death/gothic from Greece), Revenant Marquis (raw black/ambient from the UK) and a trailer for new Autopsy (death from the USA). The rest is in the playlist!
