🌶️ To The Teeth: shaking the Anti-God Hand
Plus: Incantation, Blut Aus Nord, Blood Abscission, Myrkur, Vola, Asphodelus & much more!
Welcome to the To The Teeth newsletter! Your weekly update of new heavy music. You can listen to (most) everything in the playlist on Spotify. If you like what you read, go to Patreon (receive a patch!) & Bandcamp (buy a patch!). Peppers are hot 🌶️!
I got sick, man flu, so it’s a little late and I’m sure I’ve missed a few things. Next week I’ll (hopefully) be out at a festival for the weekend, so I’m sure the update will be late then too. Sorry!
New Albums
🌶️ Anti-God Hand (black from Canada. FFO: Liturgy, Serpent Column, Gudsforladt)
What a sound! I see this band a bit as an aggressive, razor-sharp alternative to (post-)black bands like Agriculture and Liturgy (Greg Fox’ is on drums here) - or better: a supplement. Anti-God Hand has a very attractive progressive and ethereal side for sure, but pairs it so well with relentless fury. They were already one of the most interesting new black metal bands around to me, and they’re taking a big leap forward in songwriting and atmosphere.
🌶️ Blood Abscission (atmoblack, unknown. FFO: Wiegedood, Sun Worship, Ultha)
This is fan-tas-tic atmospheric black metal. Unknown members, unknown location, unknown motives for that weird cover. All the more reason to concentrate on great riff after great riff, majestic hook after majestic hook, perfect vocals, subtle but beautiful synths, sweeping melodies. I can’t stop listening to it.
🌶️ Incantation (death metal from the USA. FFO: Sinister, Immolation, Autopsy)
Near-legendary new york death metal. This band has been at it for more than 23 years and doesn’t seem to slow, nor water down. Leather jacketed death metal that always hits the mark, sometimes knuckles dragging on the floor, other times while swinging them at your face.
🌶️ Blut Aus Nord (black from France. FFO: Deathspell Omega, The Ruins of Beverast, Thantifaxath)
It’s always a surprise what you get with Blut Aus Nord. Atmospheric black? Industrial? Ambient? Avant-garde black? A hodgepodge? This time the total sonic nightmare from last year’s first Disharmonium chapter continues. Do not close your eyes while listening to this.
🌶️ Asphodelus ( doom/death from Finland. FFO: old Katatonia, old Rotting Christ, old Paradise Lost)
Is it 1993? Asphodelus channels the forlorn, gloomy vibe I love from the nineties very well. And so, I love this band. Yes, I’m old too.
🌶️ Pyrkagion (black/death from the USA. FFO: Gevurah, Misþyrming, Nightbringer)
You better believe how fast Bell Witch-bassist Dylan Desmond can play if he wants to. He’s on guitars in this new project, together with Zach Wise (Hissing) and Brennan Butler (Human Effluence). Good stuff! (Read an interview at Invisible Oranges).
🌶️ Hypomanic Daydream (avantgarde death from the USA. FFO: Voivod, but played on a SNES)
You’ll have to hear this for yourself. (This was a Plague Rages find, read it!)
There’s more: Transgressor (🌶️ death from Japan), Celestial Sanctuary (death from the UK), The Armed (experimental punkrock from the USA), Grand Cadaver (🌶️ death from Sweden - w/ members of Dark Tranquillity, ex-Katatonia), Dethklok (melodeath from the USA), Exmortus (tech-thrash/death from the USA), Bottomless (doom from Italy - w/ members of Messa, Assumption), Graveripper (black/thrash/speed from the USA), Endstille (black from Germany), Knife (blackened speed from Germany), a split from Full of Hell & Gasp (powerviolence from the USA), Nixil (black from the USA), Atoll (brutal death from the USA), Meurtrières (🌶️ heavy from France), Moon Coven (psych stoner/doom from Sweden), Colony Drop (thrash/crossover from the USA), Kyy (black from Finland) and Lepra (black/gothic from the USA). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Myrkur (atmoblack/folk from Denmark), Vola (🌶️ prog from Denmark), October Tide (melodic doom/death from Sweden), Alkaloid (prog death from Germany), Fortíð (🌶️ viking/black from Iceland), Soen (prog from Sweden), Fossilization (🌶️ death/doom from Brazil), Temperance (melodic heavy/power from Italy - feat. Arjen ‘Ayreon’ Lucassen), Vertebra Atlantis (🌶️ experimental black/death from Italy), Stortregn (melodic death/black from Switzerland), KEN Mode (noise from the USA) and Rorcal (🌶️ sludge/doom/post from Switzerland). The rest is in the playlist!
Non-heavy & next week
Non-heavy album of the week: Becca Mancari (indie rock/folk from the USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Taake, Soen, Marduk, Weald and Woe, Demoniac & Imperial Crystalline Entombment.
