New Albums
🌶️ Cattle Decapitation (progressive death/grind from the USA. FFO: Aborted, Dying Fetus, Benighted)
I’ve always felt this band is like being an old dude watching a machine that looks really cool. Doesn’t really matter what it does, it looks cool and you can forget about all of it when you’re done watching it. That’s not entirely fair to the band, especially considering they’ve got such a poignant message to tell. But it’s how I feel and this new album aint changing that. It’s too good and too interesting to skip though!
🌶️ Ascended Dead (death from the USA. FFO: Suffering Hour, Necrot, Triumvir Foul)
There’s a lot to love here. The unhinged vocals, the falling from a flight of stairs drums, the intensity, the madness - but what I love most are the solo’s. Goddamn they’re glorious.
🌶️ Esoctrilihum (avantgarde black from France. FFO: Aevangelist, Howls of Ebb)
Esoctrilihum works with atmosphere as easily as with melody. The result is terrifying, and super interesting and also completely nuts. There’s a ritualistic touch to sole member Asthâghul’s music, but urgency has the upper hand. It’s no easy listening by any means. Another great release from this prolific, talented musician (his tenth full length since 2017), and another great release from I, Voidhanger Records.
🌶️ Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean (sludge/doom from the USA. FFO: Thou, Primitive Man, Fórn)
I like big riffs and I cannot lie.
There’s more: a new ep from A Pregnant Light (post-black from the USA), Óreiða (black from Iceland), Gonemage (experimental post-black from the USA), Impetuous Ritual (death from Australia), Perilaxe Occlusion (death from Canada), Veriluola (black/death from Finland/USA), The Troops of Doom (death/thrash from Brazil) a split from Galvanizer & Morbific (death from Finland) and previously unreleased material from Stormkeep (meloblack/dungeon synth from the USA - w/ members of Blood Incantation, Wayfarer). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Thantifaxath (🌶️ avantgarde black from Canada), Fen (🌶️ atmoblack/post from the UK), Urne (stoner/sludge/metalcore from the UK), Pupil Slicer (mathcore/grind from the UK), Gouge Away (🌶️ post-hardcore from the USA), Vomitory (death from Sweden), Geld (🌶️ hardcore from the USA), Thy Catafalque (avantgarde from Hungary), Bongzilla (the song is called ‘King of weed’, just guess what this sounds like, USA), Sammath (🌶️ black from The Netherlands), Nattverd (black from Norway), Werewolves (tech black/death from Australia), Wytch Hazel (hardrock/heavy from the UK) and Charlotte Wessels & Zora Cock (🌶️ symphonic/rock from The Netherlands - ex-Delain and Blackbriar) did a Ghost cover. The rest is in the playlist!
Non-heavy & next week
Non-heavy album of the week: Colin Stetson (experimental indie/jazz from the USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Botanist, Frozen Soul, The Ocean, Pa Vesh En, Shadows and Thulcandra.
What was your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
All the Thy Catafalque singles have been bangers, that album's shaping up to be a monster.
