New Albums
š¶ļø Ihsahn
Progressive black from Norway (Candlelight Records)
FFO: Emperor, Opeth, Borknagar
Ihsahnās solo efforts have (like Emperor before that) been a super interesting ride with little lows and plenty highs. Vegard Sverre Tveitan is looking back a little bit on his newest, incorporating everything heās done in the past with a steady foot in the present. The second half is the orchestral version, which stands as a great listen on itās own. Ihsahn surpassed himself here.
š¶ļø Darkspace
Atmospheric black/ambient, Switzerland (Season of Mist)
FFO: Battle Dagorath, Midnight Odyssey, Arkhtinn
Iāve seen Darkspace once, it was one of the most captivating shows Iāve seen. That is until the drum computer gave out and the ghostly figures turned around to eachother, clearly confused, even though we couldnāt see their faces. Anyway. Thereās not much humour on this album, their first in ten years, and thatās good. Itās very much puzzling though, as you would think 47 minutes of unrelenting space black is. Much space, very dark.
š¶ļø Entheos
Experimental black, Canada (self released)
FFO: Givre, Gris, Krallice
This band has a special place in my heart. I first stumbled upon them in 2017 (very likely via a tip from Jon Rosenthal at Invisible Oranges) with Le Zahir, an absolute beauty of a record I still listen to from time to time. Theyāve changed, evolved, brought predecessing band Givre back to life and are still around.
Thereās more: The Obsessed (doom from the USA), Ponte Del Diavolo (doom/black from Italy), Pestilength (black/doom from Spain), Eternal Storm (melodeath from Spain), Lvme (black - I donāt know where from) and Farsot (black from Germany). The rest is in the playlist!
Five new songs
I thought this section had a little too many links without much direction, so Iām trying something new this week. Less, so itās more. Youāll find all new songs in the playlist (if theyāre on Spotify) as usual. These are the hot singles in your area youāre looking for!
Unleash the Archers (power from Canada)
Coffins (doom/death from Japan)
Night Verses (prog/post-hardcore from the USA - w/ Brandon Boyd of Incubus)
Khold (black from Norway)
Deicide (death from the USA)
The rest is in the playlist!
Non-metal & next week
Non-metal album of the week: Laura Jane Grace (punk from the USA)
Iām looking forward to next week because of: Borknagar, Morta Skuld & Darkest Hour.
What is your favourite? What did I miss? What do you think of the new singles feature? Let me know!
Big fan of the new singles section. I like choices. Being complete is overrated.
That new Ihsahn is so good. Really liked the new Eternal Storm from the premiere earlier this week, too. Bought Entheos but haven't listened yet! Also need to listen to the new Motorowl.
I'm really excited for next week with new Borknagar, Job for a Cowboy, and I feel like there's other stuff too.
