I’m away for a couple of days, so I’ve made this one in advance and the playlist probably won’t be up to date very much. I’m sure I have missed more good stuff than usual. Let me know in a comment!
New Albums
🌶️ Sól án Varma (black from Iceland. FFO: Misþyrming, Zhrine, Taake)
There are a lot of prolific, talented black metal circles, but nothing comes close to the quality output of the Icelandic tribe. This new entity is founded by T.Í. and D.G. of Misþyrming and Naðra, and there are members of Carpe Noctem, Árstíðir Lífsins, Svartidauði, Wormlust involved. I was here when they did this live at Roadburn which I remember as a little messy, but that said: this is killer.
🌶️ Mudhoney (punk rock from the USA. FFO: Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Tad)
No it’s not metal, but heavy this is. Mudhoney are one of the few grunge-era bands that is still going strong, in a very much diy manner and most importantly: still pissed off as hell. Mudhoney forever!
🌶️ Tribulation (death/gothic from Sweden. FFO: Cloak, Ghost, Unto Others)
A band that went from death metal to gothic and made a perfect amalgam out of those sounds. They lost Jonathan Hultén, who was quite important to their sound I think. But the band is back with a new ep and a new guitarist, pretty much unfazed it seems. Plus: a Blue Öyster Cult cover is always a good idea. (Note: no Bandcamp, link here)
🌶️ Cicada The Burrower (prog/post-black from the USA. FFO: Liturgy, Ulver, Violet Cold)
‘Prog’ and ‘post’ hardly does this justice. Thick beats, synths, ratteling drums, screeches.. and yet very jazzy and kinda cheerful. Cameron Davis writes that this is a reflection on going through hormone replacement therapy: “My love. My trauma. My hope. It is a beautiful and terrifying sound.” And it is!
There’s more: Powerwolf (power from Germany), Vitriolic Sage (🌶️ black from China - this is from the dude behind Ὁπλίτης/Hoplites), Sunrot (sludge/doom/post from the USA), an ep from Devouring Famine (🌶️ black from the USA), Lurk (death/doom/sludge from Finland), Devangelic (brutal death from Italy), a split from Thecodontion & Cremented (atmospheric death from Italy & death/doom from the USA), Hot Graves (death/thrash/crust from the USA), Ossaert (black from The Netherlands), Ayyur (black from Tunisia), Nekus (black/death from Germany) and a demo from Mortuary Slab (🌶️ death from Canada).
New songs
There are new songs out from: Anti-God Hand (🌶️ black from the USA), Concilium (black/death from Portugal), Poinson Ruïn (dungeon post-punk from the USA), Unearth (metalcore from the USA), Nattverd (black from Norway), Dååth (melodeath/groove from the USA), Cronos Compulsion (death from the USA), Sarvekas (black from Finland) and Dead and Dripping (brutal death from the USA). The rest is in the playlist!
Non-heavy & next week
Non-heavy album of the week: Yaeji (electronic/dance from the USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Metallica, Dødheimsgard (aoty?), Witte Wieven & Deathgrave.
Next week we’ll return to normal!
