🌶️ To The Teeth: Great times for the Oldpeth fan
Plus: Piah Mater, Akhlys, Octoploid, Wormed, Orden Ogan, Liminal Shroud and much more!
Welcome to the To The Teeth newsletter! Your weekly update of new heavy music. You can listen to (most) everything in the playlist on Spotify. If you like what you read, go to Patreon (receive a patch!) & Bandcamp (buy a patch!). Peppers are hot 🌶️!
I’ll be at a festival next week, so no newsletter. Sorry.
New Albums
🌶️ Piah Mater
Prog death, Brazil (Aural Music)
FFO: Opeth, Luna’s Call, Anciients
These are good times for Opeth-metal. There’s the new Aquilus, and upcoming a great one from Anciients. Piah Mater stays close to the source material, but sounds more and more like themselves. Is that a saxophone? Yeah baby. That’s a saxophone.
🌶️ Akhlys
Black, USA (Debemur Morti)
FFO: Blut Aus Nord, Nightbringer, Leviathan
Well this is proper scary stuff. Akhlys was never for the faint of heart, on this one they’ve went all in on production-wise. It’s almost industrial black metal, without sounding industrial. Does that make sense?
🌶️ Octoploid
Melodic prog death, Finland (Reigning Phoenix Music)
FFO: Amorphis, Barren Earth, In Mourning
What if you love Amorphis, but there’s not enough Amorphis? Fear not, here’s Amorphis’ bassist (and songwriter) Olli-Pekka Laine with an album full of A-more-phis. Lot’s of great guests on this one, like the ex-keyboardist of Amorphis, another ex-keyboardist of Amorphis, the guitarist of Amorphis, the singer of Amorphis and the singers of Swallow the Sun and Hamferð. Is it bad that this invokes a little bit of Amorphis? Hell no, this is great.
There’s more: Wormed (brutal/tech death, Spain), Orden Ogan (power/melodeath, Germany), Liminal Shroud (black, Canada), Vimur (black, USA), Horned Almighty (black, Denmark), Steinras (black, Norway), Visions of Atlantis (melodic/symphonic power, Austria) and Black Hole Deity (death, USA). The rest is in the playlist!
Five new songs
🌶️ Spite (black, USA)
🌶️ Vanhelgd (death, Sweden)
🌶️ Abhorration (death, Norway)
🌶️ Demon Bitch (heavy, USA)
🌶️ E-An-Na (folk, Romania)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of last & this week: nothing in particular!
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Vuur & Zijde, Forgotten Tomb, Speed & Vanhelgd. (No newsletter next week though)
What is your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
Malconfort put out a really avant-garde black metal album that is the kind of weirdness I love.
Also, the remaster of Fallujah’s The Flesh Prevails is out now, and that album is finally listenable! A masterpiece gets the production job it deserves.
