New Albums
🌶️ Coffin Storm
Heavy/doom, Norway (Peaceville Records)
FFO: old Darkthrone, old metal, old people
This is a new band with Kolbotn-pals Apollyon (Aura Noir), Bestial Tormentor (Infernö) and Fenriz (Darkthrone) on vocals. His voice is not for everyone, but it absolutely hits me right where I want it to hit me. It’s pure, traditional doom, made by people with the passion and experience to know how to navigate the swamps of an overdone style and come out the other side with a great album. And then next month Darkthrone? Cool cool.
🌶️ Nø Man
Hardcore punk, USA (Iodine Recordings)
FFO: Majority Rule, Terminal Bliss, Faim
This band blew me away in the podcast I make with two friends, Zes Losse Tanden (all Dutch), where we all bring in one song per episode, and chastise eachother’s terrible taste. But I couldn’t make fun of Nø Man, a band with members of Majority Rule: gritty, riffy, pissed off and actually very urgent, via singer Maha Shami’s Palestinian descent - “Can’t kill us all” 🍉
🌶️ Givre
Black, Canada (Eisenwald)
FFO: Entheos, Gris, Miserere Luminis
I thought I knew what this would sound like: intense, dreary atmospheric black metal a la Quebecois (there’s more of that good stuff below, with Cantique Lepreux). But these guys have concocted something more original. Sludgy, post-y even, sometimes. I really love the atmosphere here.
🌶️ Coffins
Doom/death, Japan (Relapse)
FFO: Asphyx, Hooded Menace, Autopsy
It seems like Coffins has always been around. Maybe not the most surprising band around, but amazingly consistent. Absolute filthy production - that’s good.
🌶️ Verwoed
Black, Netherlands (Wolves of Hades)
FFO: Svartidauði, Misþyrming, Vanum
Verwoed is a great one-man black metal act that seems to have found his corner of the bm world on this one. It’s intense, a little psychedelic, doomy and compelling.
There’s more: Cantique Lepreux (🌶️ black, Canada), Vorga (🌶️ black, Germany), Darkestrah (🌶️ epic black/folk, Kyrgyzstan), Mütiilation (black, France), Viaje a Ixtlán (psych/space rock, Argentina), Septage (death/grind, Denmark), a split from Wytch Hazel & Phantom Spell (hardrock/heavy, UK), Rage (heavy/speed, Germany), Dead Head (thrash/death, The Netherlands), Mordran (black/dark ambient, Sweden), and Kólga (🌶️ blackened surf rock what did I just write?, USA). The rest is in the playlist!
Five new songs
🌶️ Adversarial (black/death, Canada)
🌶️ Rotting Christ (melodic black/gothic, Greece)
🌶️ Tzompantli (death/doom, USA)
🌶️ Sig:Ar:Tyr (folk/black, Canada)
🌶️ Orthodox (metalcore/nu-metal, USA)
The rest is in the playlist!
Not-so-heavy & next week
Not-so-heavy album of the week: Kelly Moran (modern classical/electronic, USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Iron Monkey, Belore, Locrian & Witch Vomit.
What is your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
You've never steered me wrong with South American bands before so I'm really interested to check out this Viaje a Ixtlan record. The Kolga album sounds fascinating too
