🌶️🚨 To The Teeth: Devin Townsend, Disillusion, Sarcator, Voivod, Sarcator, VHS, Insomnium & much more!
Welcome to the To The Teeth newsletter! Your weekly update of new heavy music. You can listen to almost everything in the playlist on Spotify. Peppers are hot 🌶️! If you like what you read and want help keep this in the air: please head over to Patreon.
🚨 It's Bandcamp Friday! A great day to listen and buy music like everything below, and of course the To The Teeth compilation: The Taste of Teeth (with new songs from Yellow Eyes, Terzij de Horde, Al Namrood, Thrawsunblat, Charlotte Wessels and more!)
🚨 One more editor's note: it seems Musk's Twitter is shutting down Revue, the program I'm using for this newsletter. I don't know what that means right now - noone does. If the whole program goes down I'll try and set up camp somewhere else. Keep an eye on other platforms to stay in touch, like Facebook, Patreon and my Twitter feed (well, for as long as that's relevant...)
New albums
🌶️ Devin Townsend (prog from Canada. FFO: Pain of Salvation, Ihsahn, Leprous)
Oh Devin. I'm happy you're happy, I really am. But couldn't you have saved just a little bit of angryness for this album? Maybe a pinch of melancholy? Sadness, just a tad? Oh well. There are still some sharp edges, like eventually in 'Dimensions' or 'Heartbreaker' (my favourite of the album). But overall it's hard to believe this is from the same guy who wrote Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing. Bad? No, this is Devin Townsend - can't do bad, and I do like it and I also would argue this album grows on you with each listen.
It's just... very very happy.
Disclaimer: there is cd 2, called Nightwork (bonus tracks on the Spotify version) with the song 'Factions' that I only just heard and jesus harold christ on a fucking rubber crutch, it's the guy who wrote Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing.
🌶️ Disillusion (melodic/prog death from Germany. FFO: Persefone, Wilderun, Amorphis)
More prog! Not so happy. They've been around since 1994, jeez. People have had succesful football careers begin and end since then. Anyway, I've only heard the three singles and I think it's great. The comparison with Opeth I read everywhere is wrong, but these guys know how to keep a progressive death metal track interesting.
🌶️ VHS (death/grind/eyeballs from Canada. FFO: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
This is so weird. I absolutely love it.
There's more: Sarcator (🌶️ blackened thrash from Sweden), Atomic Witch (🌶️ thrash from the USA), Black Anvil (black/thrash from the USA), Mord'A'Stigmata (post/avantgarde black from Poland), a new ep from Voivod (prog from Canada), Bad Manor (🌶️ black from the USA - w/ members of Bat Magic, Beastial Majesty), Menace Ruine (avantgarde drone/black from Canada), an ep from Rosy Finch (sludge/stoner/noise from Spain), Strychnos (death/heavy/black from Denmark - w/ members of Undergang, Myrkur), Locrian (drone/ambient from the USA) and an old demo from Terzij de Horde (black from The Netherlands). (The rest is in the playlist)
New singles
There are new songs out from: Insomnium (🌶️ melodeath from Finland), Hammers of Misfortune (prog from the USA), For I Am King (🌶️ melodeath/metalcore from The Netherlands), Earthside (post/prog from the USA - feat Keturah), Cora's Heart (blackgaze from Mexico), Ashen Horde (black from the USA), Onhou (sludge/doom from The Netherlands), Bark (groove/death from Belgium - w/ member of Destruction), Ultar (post-black from Russia), Sisters of Suffocation (🌶️ death from the Netherlands), Judicator (power from the USA) and Harakiri for the Sky (post-black from Switzerland). (The rest is in the playlist)
