New Albums
🌶️ Sulphur Aeon (blackened death from Germany. FFO: Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Bölzer)
I didn’t really expect this band to go into weirder territories. But they did, and I’m very happy they did. I’m not a big fan of the production I’m afraid, but it’s still a very interesting album that will need some time to fully digest.
🌶️ Laster (atmospheric post-black from The Netherlands. FFO: Ved Buens Ende, Code, Bosse-de-Nage)
I could rave about the Dutch black metal scene for hours. There is so much quality and diversity in our small country, it makes no sense. Laster is one of the most unique of the bunch with a sound that surpasses black metal, yet drags it with them into the vortex of layered, drunken, dancing mayhem they conjur.
🌶️ Furia (black/ambient from Poland. FFO: Taake, Tsjuder, Sargeist)
This is furious black metal, until it isn’t. The first half hour is absolutely vicious music, relentless and fantastic. Halfway through it changes into nightmarish ambient soundscapes which is, although quite the change of pace, very interesting too. Hypnotic, stunning album and a great surprise.
🌶️ Krieg (black from the USA. FFO: Leviathan, Nachtmystium, Judas Iscariot)
What ist black metal? Right. Neill jameson (ex-Nachtmystium, Le Chant Funebre, Poison Blood etc etc) and Alex Poole (Chaos Moon, Entheogen, Häxanu etc etc) got together again for a full length, the first in almost ten years. It's cold and awful, just as I like my Krieg.
🌶️ Stream of Passion (prog/symphonic from The Netherlands)
A little late - I don’t know how I’ve missed the release of this ep. Aaaanyway. It’s great stuff. Really good to hear Marcela Bovio up front again!
🌶️ Varg (melodic black/death from Germany. FFO: Eisregen, Obscurity)
Hey I’m just a person of flesh and blood. I’m not immune to fun. Varg is fun. Leave me alone.
There’s more: On Thorns I Lay (🌶️ death/doom/gothic from Greece), Stortregn (melodic black/death from Switzerland), Slidhr (🌶️ black from Ireland/Iceland), Body Void (sludge/drone/doom from the USA), Hagatiz (black from Germany), a split from Silent Thunder & Zmyrna (black from the USA w/ the guy from Lamp of Murmuur, & black from Czechia/Slovakia), Fortíð (viking/black from Iceland), Mānbryne (black from Poland), a split from Tyrann & Century (both heavy from Sweden), Taubrą (black from Switzerland/Norway - w/ members of Aara), The Lion’s Daughter (progressive blackened sludge from the USA), The Answer Lies in the Black Void (🌶️ atmospheric doom from Hungary/The Netherlands), Sadistic Force (black/thrash from the USA) and Seraphic Entombment (death/doom from the USA). The rest is in the playlist!
New songs
There are new songs out from: Judas Priest (🌶️ héllo), Moon Tooth (🌶️ prog from the USA), Full of Hell & Nothing (grind/death from the USA & shoegaze from the USA), Extol (🌶️ prog death from Norway), Aeternus (🌶️ black/death from Norway), Midnight Odyssey (🌶️ ambient black from Australia), Black Stag Rising (🌶️ black from the USA), Cruciamentum (🌶️ death from the UK/USA), Mortuary Drape (🌶️ black/death from Italy), Cryfemal (🌶️ black from Spain), Swords of Dis (black/doom from the UK), Green Lung (stoner/doom from the UK), Olhava (🌶️ atmospheric/post black from Russia), Slow (🌶️ funeral doom from Belgium), Sonata Arctica (🌶️ power from Finland) and Aeon Winds (symphonic black from Slovakia). The rest is in the playlist!
Non-heavy & next week
Non-heavy album of the week: Boygenius (indiepop from the USA)
I’m looking forward to next week because of: Myrkur, Cirith Ungol, Within Temptation, Afterbirth, & Vertebra Atlantis.
What was your favourite? What did I miss? Let me know!
Thanks as always for this! Stoked to check out new body void, I've loved all their output so far. Some of the other sludge stuff looks up my alley too. And I'm very curious about new moon tooth, their album last year grew on me very quickly and has earned a solid long-term rotation spot
