🌶️ Rwake

Sludge/doom, USA (Relapse Records)

Rwake is just a band you believe. Intense and righteous. They’ve been relatively silent since 2011’s brilliant Rest, but I read they’ve been working on The Return of Magik since 2018. Well, it shows. It’s a beautifully crafted record with perfect pace and perfect balance between nightmare and dream. And there’s something about this guitar sound I just absolutely love. One of my favourite albums of the year so far.

🌶️ Dessiderium

Prog death, USA (Willowtip Records)

FFO: Ne Obliviscaris, Cormorant, Exist, Wilderun

I sure don’t know many bands that sound like Dessiderium. It’s lush and rich, with piano and strings sections dancing around harsh vocals and creative riffing. This is a solo project, but I don’t know how I should be able to tell this is all just one dude: Alex Haddad (who recently joined Atheist). Really ambitious, and he pulls it off.

🌶️ Nite

Blackened heavy, USA (Season of Mist)

FFO: Tribulation, Slaegt, Unto Others

One of those bands that even if you don’t like them, you’ll like it. Heavy Ghost, or soft Immortal. Don’t try to resist, just go softly into that good Nite.
