🌶️ To The Teeth: a blackened death double whammy, the ripping of hell & the return of the serpent

totheteeth.substack.com

Welcome to the To The Teeth newsletter! Your weekly update of new heavy music. You can listen to almost everything in the playlist on Spotify. If you like what you read and want help keep this in the air: please head over to Patreon or to Bandcamp: The Taste of Teeth (also for some merch). Peppers are hot 🌶️!

New albums

🌶️ Ulthar (blackened death from space the USA. FFO: Tomb Mold, Blood Incantation, Morbid Angel)

Not one, but two mind-blowing new albums from Ulthar. Too much? Absolutely not. These guys (with members in Spirit Possession, Vastum, Mastery and more) knocked it out of the park with this twin attack on space and time. It’s a total trip to listen them back to back, so much to unpack, so much to discover within. I read that two of them lost their jobs during the pandemic, and used all the time they suddenly had to write, write, write. It paid off in an incredible way: these are two unique, powerful and just fantastic releases.

🌶️ Hellripper (black/speed from Scotland. FFO: Midnight, Venom, Toxic Holocaust)

How are all these riffs just one dude?

🌶️ Theophonos (avantgarde black from the USA. FFO: Serpent Column)

Serpent Column is dead, long live Theophonos. The mastermind behind the lamented Serpent Column returns with a more personal affair, named after his own moniker. It’s different from Serpent Column, but it’s a fitting return: great hooks, weird passages, intense repetition, chaotic intervals - it’s too early to say, but maybe I like this even a little bit more than Serpent Column? I’m glad he’s back!

🌶️ Tithe (death/doom/grind from the USA. FFO: Hissing, Vermin Womb, Of Feather and Bone)

Yeah this is a good week for the genre mixers. Tithe’s sophomore is just under half an hour, but it’s enough: I don’t think one could take in a lot more. The vocals on this thing are absolutely crazy. (In a good way, but also in a bad way… which is good)

There’s more: Tulus (black from Norway), Cult of Fire (🌶️ epic black from Czech Republic - this arrives saturday the 18th), a split from Sëht & Trhä (raw atmospheric black from India & atmospheric black from the USA), Enisum (black/ambient from Italy), Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (doom/stoner from the UK), The Abbey (gothic/doom from Finland - w/ members of Shape of Despair, Sentenced), Vvilderness (post-black/folk from Hungary), Parasitario (death from Japan), 暴君 (Bloody Tyrant) (melodic death/folk from Taiwan) and Hexer (doom/sludge from Germany).

New songs

There are new songs out from: Cattle Decapitation (progressive death/grind from the USA), Spectral Lore (🌶️ atmoblack from Greece), The Ocean (progressive/atmospheric sludge/post from Germany), Mork (black from Norway), Lamp of Murmuur (black from the USA), Full of Hell & Primitive Man (🌶️ powerviolence/death from the USA & sludge/doom/noise from the USA), Supersonic Revolution (heavy from The Netherlands - the new Arjen Lucassen project), Netherlands (🌶️ avant-sludge from the USA), Frozen Soul (death from the USA), Thulcandra (melodic black/death from Germany), Predatory Void (🌶️ post doom from Belgium/Russia - w/ members of Cross Bringer, Amenra, Oathbreaker), Witte Wieven (🌶️ atmoblack from The Netherlands - w/ member of Scarlet Stories, Freja), Kamelot (melodic power from the USA), Majesties (🌶️ melodeath from the USA - w/ members of Obsequiae, Inexorum), Ignea (symphonic/prog/folk from Ukraine 🌻), Haken (prog from the UK) and Ossaert (black from The Netherlands). The rest is in the playlist!

Non-metal & next week

Non-metal album of the week: Caroline Polachek (pop from the USA)

I’m looking forward to next week because of: Big|Brave, Heidevolk, Insomnium, Megaton Sword & Omega Infinity.

What was your favourite? Do you like the new newsletter? Should I change anything? What did I miss? Let me know!
